Mir Castle

Mir Castle, rising in red brick above a moat and lake in central Belarus, is one of the country's most beautiful and beloved landmarks, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Begun in the early sixteenth century, it grew over the centuries into a striking blend of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque, with sturdy corner towers, decorative brickwork and a graceful courtyard. Carefully restored, it now houses a museum evoking the life of the noble families who held it, and its reflection in the surrounding water makes for a scene of real fairy-tale charm. Set in gentle countryside, it is a jewel of Belarusian heritage.

May to September brings warm weather and green countryside, ideal for exploring the castle and its lakeside grounds and catching its reflection in the water; the castle is also atmospheric under winter snow. The soft light of late spring and early autumn flatters the red brick beautifully.

Honest expectations

Mir is a compact castle rather than a sprawling fortress, so a visit is fairly short, and its extensive restoration means much of what is seen is carefully rebuilt rather than original. As a fairy-tale UNESCO World Heritage masterpiece of red brick reflected in its moat, though, Mir Castle is one of the most romantic and rewarding sights in Belarus.
