Santa Ana Volcano and Lake Coatepeque

The Santa Ana Volcano, or Ilamatepec, is the highest volcano in El Salvador and one of its most rewarding adventures. A popular, moderate guided hike climbs through forest and open volcanic slopes to the summit crater, which cradles a stunning, steaming turquoise-green crater lake, an unforgettable and otherworldly sight, with sweeping views over the surrounding highlands. At the volcano's foot lies the beautiful Lake Coatepeque, a vast, deep-blue caldera lake formed by ancient eruptions, ringed by green slopes and dotted with viewpoints and lakeside spots for swimming, kayaking and relaxing, together forming a spectacular volcanic landscape.

When to go

November to April, the dry season, for the best hiking conditions and clearest views; the Santa Ana hike is typically done in the morning, often as a guided group for safety, and can be cloudy or windy at the exposed summit. Lake Coatepeque is a beautiful, warm spot to relax and swim year-round, a perfect pairing with the climb.

Honest expectations

Santa Ana is an active volcano that has erupted in the past and is monitored, so access can occasionally be restricted, and the hike, while moderate, is a few hours of real uphill effort, usually done with a guide; the summit can be cold, windy and cloud-covered, hiding the crater lake. When conditions are clear, though, the steaming turquoise crater lake is astonishing, and paired with the beautiful blue Lake Coatepeque below, this is El Salvador's finest volcanic landscape.
