Carnac lines up one of the strangest sights in Europe: some three thousand granite menhirs marching in parallel rows across the heath for kilometres, raised by Neolithic communities between roughly 4800 and 3500 BC - centuries before Stonehenge took shape. The great fields of Menec, Kermario and Kerlescan run their stones from knee-high markers to monsters, and nobody can say with certainty why: processional ways, ancestor rites and astronomical schemes all keep their advocates, which is half the pull. The alignments anchor a wider megalithic landscape of dolmens, tumuli and the Morbihan gulf's chambered islands - a territory of more than five hundred sites inscribed together on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2025, Brittany's first entry. The Maison des Megalithes sets up the mystery; the low light of morning or evening does the rest, throwing shadows the length of the rows.

What you actually see

  • The Menec alignment - a thousand-plus stones in converging rows.
  • Kermario's giants - the heaviest menhirs and a flanking dolmen.
  • The Saint-Michel tumulus - the burial mound with views over the fields.
  • The Morbihan megaliths - Locmariaquer's broken great menhir and gulf tombs nearby.

When to go

April to June and September give clear light without peak crowds; low morning or evening sun is when the rows photograph best. July and August restrict the core fields to guided visits, while the off-season opens freer access to the paths.

Honest expectations

The main alignments are fenced to protect eroding ground - expect to admire most rows from the perimeter path unless you book the guided entry, and summer tours sell out. The stones stretch along a busy road with scattered parking. It is a landscape to walk or cycle slowly, not a single ten-minute stop.

Nearby

Locmariaquer's megaliths, the Quiberon peninsula and the Gulf of Morbihan.
