Mtskheta

Mtskheta, just outside Tbilisi at the confluence of two rivers, is one of the oldest cities in Georgia and the spiritual heart of the nation, where Georgians first adopted Christianity in the fourth century. A UNESCO site, this ancient former capital is home to two of the holiest and most beautiful churches in the country: the great Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, the traditional coronation and burial place of Georgian kings, and, on a hill above, the small, sublime sixth-century Jvari Monastery with sweeping views over the town.

As deeply sacred, active churches, modest dress is required, with women often needing to cover their hair, and scarves are usually available at the door. It is a half-day visit rather than a full day. Its ancient churches and spiritual significance, though, are at the heart of Georgian identity.
