Jebel Shams, the Mountain of the Sun, is the highest peak in Oman, rising over 3,000 metres in the rugged Al Hajar range. Its great draw is the spectacular canyon known as the Grand Canyon of Arabia, whose sheer rock walls plunge over a kilometre into the gorge of Wadi Ghul. Dramatic clifftop viewpoints look down into the abyss, the famous Balcony Walk trail traces a ledge along the canyon wall to an abandoned village, and the mountain air is refreshingly cool.
What you actually see
- The canyon rim - the dramatic viewpoints over the great gorge.
- The Balcony Walk - the cliff-ledge trail to an abandoned village.
- The mountain heights - the cool air atop Oman's highest peak.
- The village crafts - the traditional rug-weaving of the mountain villages.
When to go
October to April for pleasant temperatures, as it is much cooler than the lowlands at altitude, and can even be cold at night in winter; the clear, cool season is best for the walks and views. Summer haze can obscure the canyon.
Honest expectations
The mountain roads up require a four-wheel drive for the upper sections, so most visitors come with a tour or a suitable vehicle. The famous Balcony Walk runs along an unfenced cliff ledge with sheer drops, so it demands a head for heights and care, though it is not technically difficult. It is remote, and facilities are basic. The canyon views are magnificent.
Nearby
Nizwa, the old village of Misfat al Abriyeen and the mountain terraces are nearby.
