Wadi Shab is one of the most beautiful wadis in Oman, a spectacular canyon carved into the desert mountains near the coast, where a series of stunning turquoise pools winds between soaring cliffs and lush groves of date palms. Reached by a short boat crossing and then a walk along the canyon, the reward at the end is a swim through the pools to a hidden waterfall cascading dramatically inside a partly submerged cave, a magical desert oasis.
What you actually see
- The turquoise pools - the string of clear blue-green pools in the canyon.
- The hidden cave waterfall - the falls inside the partly submerged cave.
- The palm groves - the lush date palms and greenery along the wadi.
- The canyon walk and swim - the trail and swim to the falls.
When to go
October to April for pleasant temperatures for the walk and swim, as summer is fiercely hot; go early to enjoy it before the midday heat and the crowds, especially at weekends.
Honest expectations
Reaching the waterfall involves a rocky walk of about 45 minutes and then swimming through several pools and a narrow gap into the cave, so a reasonable level of fitness and comfort in water are needed; it is not a drive-up sight. It can be busy at weekends. As a natural swimming spot in a Muslim country, modest swimwear is respectful. Bring water shoes and a dry bag.
Nearby
The Bimmah Sinkhole, the coastal town of Sur and the Wahiba Sands are nearby.
